Business Blogging is fast becoming a vital part of any online strategy. The old days of “blogging puritanism” where bloggers were not supposed to make money have given way to individuals, companies and non-profits all hoping to use blogs and social media to grow and engage their audience.

  1. Great ideas on your slides Chris – I especially like the success stories, many of which I was unaware of.

    Although its a big advantage to be able to plan out what you’d like to achieve in advance, I also think the serendipity of blogging is of major benefit to businesses and individuals.

    Most people starting out blogging have little or no idea what to expect (either individuals or businesses), therefore when things start to happen (comments, positive feedback, new dialogues with existing and new customers etc), the impact is tremendous.

    Because of blogging my wife became an expert in her area (food – she runs a small deli) and was invited to appear on TV and in national magazines. Needless to say we were amazed by this!

    Plus, as Seth Godin says, the metacognition from blogging is another amazing, unexpected benefit. He’s surely right that the process alone of reflecting on your experiences in public brings its own huge rewards.

  3. Yes the serendipity can be amazing, as can the benefits of “learn while you teach”. I find though that businesses more than any other type of blogger need to know what they hope to achieve as often you need to persuade a boss/board that it is a good idea, and then have to show value in spending your time on the activity. Knowing what you want to do, why, and who for helps 🙂

  7. without a doubt! one of the best slides on business blogging. I know that it works as I get to make lot of clients just with the help of my blog itself. its working so good for me that at times I have to reject projects because they sometimes get out of capacity.

    I hope that businesses learn the power of blogging and social media and start to use it as part of their marketing plans.

  19. Fantastic set of slides. I recently wrote an article for my E-zine about why blogging is no longer optional if you are doing business on the web. The point about providing “overwhelming value” is spot on.

Something important for people to remember is that you have to put a bit of thought into your blog name and purpose, even if that purpose will change slightly over time – but get the name right because once you start and you start to get a name and a following it can be ‘costly’ in terms of all that trust and good will and possible links to have to change when your focus changes.

    It have to take time and a lot of work to really make money in blogging.

  35. It’s so funny – we discovered the power of blogs and the business connection about 3 years ago. We saw right away, the potential a business could these tools to their advantage. But here In Chicago, most people still don’t get it! So many of my clients are outside of the state. But since we live in a virtual world – that’s fine.

    But we discovered early on, how to capitalize on keywords for any given industry. And we have over 25 case studies to back up what a blog can do for someone’s web presence. Sure, ANYONE can start a blog. But it has to be set up for success. And as you know, most people who want to do-it-yourself – make the 10 most common blogging mistakes and get off on the wrong foot!

    I now manange about a dozen sites daily, 2 dozen sites monthly. But even now, some people JUST DON”T GET IT. I get exhausted being an evangelist sometimes.
