The old ways aren’t working

Permission Marketing and How to Grow Better, Long-Lasting, Customer Relationships

Traditional advertising and sales tactics are losing their power. Customers no longer trust old-school ads or hard-selling salespeople. Instead, success now depends on creating relationships through content, search, and permission, not just pushing products.

Discover why marketing funnels have become essential, how they work, and how you can use them to build trust, loyalty, and sales effectively:

The Old Ways Aren’t Working (Why Marketing Funnels Exist)

Historically, businesses relied on advertising campaigns on TV, radio, and print that generated awareness and some interest, but did little to build trust or loyalty.

Think of a super memorable Super Bowl ad – can you recall what they were actually selling? The truth is, traditional ads have lost much of their influence, now they primarily create awareness but rarely lead directly to sales.

Trust Decay and Buying Habits:

  • Decreased trust: Old ads once suggested that products like cigarettes or alcohol were good for you. Now consumers are more skeptical.
  • Shift to the internet: People now research products online before talking to anyone. They read reviews, watch videos, and compare options.
  • Salespeople / Gatekeepers: Seeking advice from salespeople, many customers get limited and often unhelpful information (eg. pushing you towards high commission products rather than the ideal solution). This has turned sales interactions into order-taking rather than informed relationship-building.

Now: Content, Search, and Permission

Instead of relying on traditional advertising, successful companies now use content marketing and funnel optimisation to attract, educate, and build trust with potential customers.

What Seth Godin coined as “Permission Marketing”:

  • Content Marketing: Creating helpful and relevant information that answers customer questions.
  • Search Optimisation (SEO): Working with an SEO agency to make sure your content ranks highly on search engines, so customers find you when they look for solutions.
  • Permission-Based Marketing: Gaining consent to communicate with customers about things they are interested in, which makes future interactions mutually valuable.

This combination works across the customer journey, from unaware, through awareness (knowing about your solution) to interest, decision, and finally, action (purchase).

Imagine content as the glue, and also the motivator. When you optimise content for both humans and search engines, and then share it via social media, you create a powerful cycle:

  • Good Content: Educates and engages your audience.
  • SEO: Ensures your content is discoverable.
  • Social Sharing: Increases reach and credibility.

This integrated approach helps nurture potential customers and encourages them to take the next step (signing up, asking questions, or making a purchase).

The Rise of “AI” Chat and LLMs

Now with the new raft of “AI” recommendations and LLM chats, it is even more important to be out there in the web showing up credibly with differentiated solutions, content that explains how you help people, and getting recommendations.

These tools are intended to provide informed answers based on the user’s preferences and situations, it is no longer enough to rank in Google for generic one-size-fits-all “Top 10 Best ______” articles.

Building a Permission Marketing Funnel

Start with who you can help and how. What makes your solutions better than the alternatives, and especially how can you prove it?

1. Top of Funnel: Awareness and Education

The top of your funnel should enable the people who you can best help to find you, but also see themselves reflected in your case studies and stories.

Your goal is to make people aware of your brand and educate them about your products or services. Use search, video, social, and your blog content to reach your ideal target audience.

2. Gain Permission

Once they are interested, ask for permission to continue the conversation. This usually happens through an email sign-up, but other opt-in methods include following you on social media, joining a discord server/facebook/linkedin group, or subscribing to your YouTube channel.

Why permission matters: Ongoing permission allows you to communicate with a demonstrably interested audience, and without constantly spending on ads.

3. Nurture Engagement and Build Trust

With permission, start sending targeted content that deepens the relationship. Share valuable insights, or stories that help people trust your brand and see how your solutions suit their situation.

4. Increase Loyalty and Desire

Keep engaging your audience through consistent content delivery. Social media followers and email subscribers become an engaged audience who grow to believe you can help them and see you as an authority.

5. Convert to Customers

Once trust and desire are built, introduce offers and strong calls-to-action. Because the customer already believes and trusts you, conversions are much easier.

6. Grow Customer Lifetime Value and Referrals

After a sale, continue offering value through follow-up emails, loyalty discounts, or offers that encourage repeat business. Don’t forget to ask for referrals and sharing!

Why Is Permission-Based Marketing So Important?

Gaining permission shifts the focus from interrupting potential customers to serving them. It makes your marketing more cost-effective because:

  • Pay only once when using ads for initial awareness.
  • Engaged and voluntary recipients feel you respect them more than people who are constantly being interrupted or cold-pitched.
  • You can communicate repeatedly without heavy ongoing costs.
  • Customers are more likely to buy when they have seen proof.

Bottom Line

Modern marketing can no longer be about shouting louder or having the biggest budget, it’s about building relationships through helpful content, and being given permission.

A structured funnel can transform your approach, making it easier to turn strangers into happy, confident, loyal customers.

Remember, long term success comes from offering consistent value, understanding your audience, and respecting their choices.
