@Jonathan - You weren't surprised? Ah, I will have to try harder ;)

@Arjun - Great insights, I particularly like the "lickable" one :)

@Slade - But should we give them what they want or what they need? (low fat, low sugar, with fruit, or triple-choc-lard-busters?) ;)

@Jamie - Hopefully it is possible to strike something remarkable and through that highly popular, though you are right this is probably more of a long tail thing

@Colbs - Cool story, have you blogged that? I think it would make a cool article

@Greg - Good point :)

@LAChick - Yeah, sometimes it is good to just be obsessive about providing the very best of one thing. You can still provide other stuff but you have to be known for something in particular :)

@Jeanne - Good to know I don't have to change gender to appreciate your stuff ;)

@steamy - If it was it would be no fun ;)

@Sue - Seth Godin should go into the ice cream business - he would invent cool flavours and you would always get a free prize ;)

@Morgan - Full of nuts :)

Now the world knows why you're always smiling.
I've thought up a new ice cream name- CGIce Cream! Flavor, obviously full of really good things. Later.

Short, sweet and on target, Chris. Nice. I think early on, when you just want someone, anyone to read your cool stuff you get sucked in to a mass market one-flavor-fits-the-world flavor mentality and you crank out some vanilla-chocolate swirl with lots of air. Once we connect our passion with others who share the same passion we see our calling to make our own "Cherries Garcia"...and part of the world answers. After finishing Seth Godin's The Dip, I am ready to pursue my "Super Sustainable People Growth Granola Munch". I'll have one huge dip of that, please.

Love the analogy and love ice cream. The world has gotten so interconnected that specializing can reach a far wider audience than ever before. Please checkout my blog entitled Sell Like A Girl.com
You don't have to be a girl to appreciate this different approach to selling. Thanks Chris.

You make so much sense Chris. It's only 9am her in Australia and I want an Ice Cream. Yum!

I've used a theory not unlike what you've spoken about here to build the two businesses I run. I was lucky enough to be introduced to Seth Godin's books and they showed me the error of my generalist ways.

People told me I was insane when I decided the only bed linen I would stock was White Fairtrade Organic Cotton Sheets, but hey, that's what I love and there seems to be several people in the world just like me :)

I had a conversation with a friend of mine the other day about how our businesses are going. He started his company 4 years ago which was shortly after I started mine. He said he was doing great and I asked why.

At first he did residential, commercial and used all different types of products to make his final project. then a couple of years later he found out what in his industry was most needed and what he was best at producing. His niche within his industry. This intrigued me because we found out the same thing at about the same time.

It was not until we realized that our audience liked cookie dough chocolate supreme the best that we were able to focus on the isolated creative marketing, buying and quality of materials that go into cookie dough chocolate supreme. This is when we started to make a good profit. Because we really started focus on the niche with in our products and services.

Thanks for thoughts
