I have 60 domain names that should be 86′d, but for lucky number 7 above!

Although, I did recently by a domain name and three alternatives (plurals and “er”) and am developing it now http://www.webpageadvisor.com/blog. But the math just does not add up all of the renewals, does it?

1)are potential investments – like real estate
2)can be parked and earn their keep or more
3)can be offered for sale to see what size offers come in
4)can drain your bank account and leave you feeling broke
5)can be rented
6)can be released to the wild
7)are most often held on to like a lottery ticket, with the same effect
8)can make you feel dumb
9)are often focused on an idea, rather than type-in traffic
10)commercial domain names with hyphens, misspellings, numbers instead of letters or more than 10 characters should be 86′d (see 8 and 6 above)

@Jonathan – Time is a massive issue, I am not sure how much of an investment mine are but I think I will do something with some of them!

@Mark – Renewals, why do we do it when we don’t know what use the domains are?

@Barry – My first domain (lapsed a long time ago and been snapped up by others at least twice since then) was £100, so about $200 at todays rates. I could have bought at least 10 for that

@Novice SEO – That’s the problem, they are worth a lot more when you do something with them, even if it is just get them some PR and sell text links.

@Sheila – Yeah some of mine are .co.uk or .org/.net variations but I don’t tend to register those quite as much any more

@Mark – One thing at a time is a good idea, I think we tend to get caught up on the scarcity thinking someone else will run with it.

@Adam – That is one of the motivations to snap them up, and then all the variations, what if someone else gets there first???

@Gabor – Yeah it is crazy how that happens. Scott Adams has a theory that we “catch” ideas rather than “create” them. I kind of believe it.

@Steve – Familiar feeling, “I haven’t done anything but you just know someone else will do great things with it and sell it on for a million”

@A Blog – A give away is a nice idea so long as you can live with someone else building on your domain!

@Jim – It’s a nice comforting thought that they do come in useful

@LAChick – Now the thing is, do you think 1 domain is better or some of the people here with a ton of them?

@Brad – Even if I do sell up I think I should do something with them first. Perhaps it is just my lack of negotiation but in my experience you get more for domains that have been worked on than pure domain value alone.

@pelf – Outsourcing and delegation. Although I do know one person who personally writes a whole network of blogs!

@Ed – Thanks, kind of you to say I have a domain for my wife and another for my daughter. Plus a couple more family ones. The rest are my crazy ideas

@Terry – I think I could do with pruning back the obviously duplicate ones but then I risk someone taking the not so good domain, running with it and causing confusion for the good one should I ever use it!

@Linda – It is a lot of blogging unless you get other bloggers on board?

@Garry – Like you I am no Domainer, but they do make money when they get the hang of it though, perhaps it is worth investigating

@Rebecca – My wife buys clothes for our daughter all the time without considering if they will ever get worn So it is not just me who wastes our cash

@ecoshopper – Auto renewal is what keeps all of mine there, I should really let some lapse

@Jermayn – I get clients to register their own, I prefer having them look after their ongoing payments for hosting or domains as it is better for them to have those vendor relationships directly so they get notifications, invoices and contacts without me mediating. I have enough trouble remembering all my own accounts
