ScribeFire 2.0 Released

One of the best things to come out of the original incarnation of Performancing was the Firefox extension for bloggers. Originally called Performancing for Firefox, when Performancing was sold to Splashpress it was rebranded ScribeFire (the software was not part of the sale).

I’m pleased to learn that Patrick has not abandoned it, but has with developer Christopher Finke been quietly upgrading it. Today I discovered my browser was telling me the extension has been improved yet again to version 2.0!

If you are new to ScribeFire then you are in for a treat. Established users will be very pleased with some of the new features and improvements.

ScribeFire is an addon for Firefox that allows you to blog right in your browser without leaving the web page you are viewing.

ScribeFire is an extension for the Mozilla Firefox Web Browser that integrates with your browser to let you easily post to your blog: you can drag and drop formatted text from pages you are browsing, take notes, and post to your blog.

You can highlight some text and bring that into your article as a quote with attribution (as I did above), write in WYSIWYG or code view and post in draft or published. You can even tag or submit to several social bookmarking sites.

As well as posting to the many blogs I write for, I keep ideas, notes and bullets for future articles.

One strange ommission that I have only been asking about for a couple of years (heh) is the lack of heading tags (eg. H3), although you can change font and size within the editor.

    Thanks Chris,

I’ve not come across ScribeFire before, but have been idly looking for something that would allow me to do just this. Am trialling now and am very pleased with the results so far!

I just installed the update and it seems that it fixed most of the problems I had with it. I might start using it a little more often.

It certainly helps make me more productive :)

Been using for about a month now. The new release adds a toolbar to the top of my blog that probably could have been made optional. I have to keep closing it everytime.

Thanks Chris, i’ll have to try that extension now. It will make it less conspicuous when I blog from work.

I tried using ScribeFire, as well as Performancing, but I always had trouble logging in and uploading with my MT account. I sent an email but never received an response. Hopefully the support has improved as well.

    Chris,
I have become a big fan of MS Live Writer. It’s free. You can use it off line. It matches up to the style of your blog–and can accommodate lots of different blogs and blogging tools, including WordPress, which is my blogging tool of choice.
So, although Scribefire sounds great, I wouldn’t be inclined to switch.

@VM - Why close it? Doesn’t seem to take much room? But mention it, shouldn’t be difficult to make optional.

    @lnahinu - A bonus I hadn’t thought of :)

@Sandra - Worth a try again, they seem serious about making it a success

@Newt - I tried the first version of Microsoft live writer but I use a Mac, plus I always have firefox open anyway so it’s a no brainer to use one app instead of two for me. Scribefire does everything I need and supports all the major blogging services and platforms. Worth a try at the very least.

    Hi——Chris:

I too am a ScribeFire user, and have been for quite some time now, as i have several blogs, and also have a blog “job”.

I’m glad you took the time to outline the features on this NEW version.

P.S. I always wanted to be able to submit my posts, to more social networking sites, as i hardly ever use Delicious. So Cool New Add-On!

    Missy.

Oh, i now see a timestamp feature on ScribeFire, that is too awesome, as it was one of my major pet peeves with SF. Sweet!

Very cool addon I hadn’t heard of! Thanks for sharing it… sounds like I simply must have it.

    Chris,
OK, I’ll give it a try.

If it weren’t for the lack of offline support, headings etc., I’d have used it.

For now, Live Writer on Windoze and Ecto/MarsEdit (depending on whether you’re HTML-literate) seems the best bet.
