Please help me with a charity webinar idea?

I have set myself a goal of raising £10,000 for a children’s heart surgery charity. So far through asking on Twitter there has been raised around £700, so clearly I need to put in some extra effort if I am going to achieve this goal :)

Through discussions with friends on the Authority Blogger Forum and Twitter we had the idea to hold a webinar or teleseminar, with a small ticket price of, say £1/$1.50 or so, and all the proceeds going to the charity.

After sounding out a few folks on Twitter to see if there would be any interest, I contacted Rob Anderson from Accuconference who generously gave me the go ahead.

So now it is over to you.

Would you be interested, and if so, what would you most want me to do a webinar about?

  • Hi Chris,
I've been in the fundraising business for 20 years. I think your idea is super. One thing I've noticed is that if you leave the amount of the donation more open you will find people donating 5, 10, 20 or more. Or you could give them amount options to choose from (with the cause prominent and adjacent to the selection point.) As far as topic my greatest need on all of my websites is increasing traffic. Best of luck to you!! Awesome idea.
  • I am delighted to see that your first comment came from someone, who, like me,is all at sea with data: like analytic (Google?) about my blog - and what they mean. What actions should we feel that we can then take, using that data. A good topic for an excelenet idea of yours. Best wishes with it. Neil
  • Great idea. I would like to a webinar about how blogs can set and run campaigns. I'm trying to run campaigns on environmental stadium technology and stadium blood donation events. Some tips and advice would be good.
  • I would definitely participate. Any topic you chose would be a great webinar but why not talking about connecting web and charity/non-profits.

Not only is an engaging subject but you have experienced people by your side to help you with that.
  • Blogs and websites are the same, both are using "http://www..." . I think it is a good topic. If combined with making money online then it is perfect. Good luck Chris!
  • topics: websites (not blogs) that make money on the web and why, free web tools that help users create their own online business, successful sites and sites that failed and why etc.
  • I'd be interested in your thoughts about fundraising via Twitter, webinars, etc. ... both after and during the process.

I fundraise for the GNOME Foundation, http://gnome.org/friends and Kids on Computers, http://www.kidsoncomputers.org.
  • Have you considered making the webinar free but the slides or achived podcast are available for a donation? You could add an appeal at the end of the webinar.

Also, why do it all yourself? You could ask friends to create pages on Justgiving (or Firstgiving in the US) to expand your reach. They could then solicit donations from their friends giving your campaign some leverage.
  • Good idea, Chris! I would recommend a webinar about building and promoting a blog about charities like yours and mine ;) Two months we started our own webshop to raise money for kids in Indonesia. And I would be very interested in how to keep your audience focused on our foundation by using the web. Maybe you could present us a webstrategy implemented for the charity you are raising money for. In this way you're helping your charity with money and your knowledge. But also other charities like mine :)

    Greetings from Holland
  • Chris,

    Here are three suggestions:
    - a webinar on the first lesson of the AB course
    - a case study of successful social media marketing
    - something complimentary but a little off your usual topic and where you interview someones else?

£1 - to listen live is very cheap.
Can you make it so that donations are whatever people want to give?
  • Chris,

In addition to the paid Webinar (which is a terrific idea), have you considered doing an online silent auction? Contributions could be site subscriptions, courses, webinars, conferences, event tickets, or whatever you might imagine. Set specific start and ending times and collect payments via PayPal.

We used to be very active volunteers and raised thousands for good causes via silent auctions. See no reason this could not be done online. Am also sure you have a large enough following to gather a good number of contributions and bidders.
  • embarrassing moment, I tried to donate, it looks like it is only in euro, with no conversion that I can see, I would donate through paypal, but it is not clickable on the screen, thanks kathy
  • Thanks for doing this for the kids!

    YES, I WILL CONTRIBUTE

A topic I would recommend is the same as above, Tracy,
I am a beginner too, really need help with the basics of blog promotion,,,

    Chris,

Any topic you do a webinar about will be great.

I would say, make the webinar easily available for download via mp3 and iTunes... Make it easy to donate... ie widget with direct access to Paypal.... Make a FB group so ppl can support the cause easily, repost the link on FB, twitter, ect...

You'll rock it! Need my help let me know. VickyH
  • Chris, I have never participated in a teleseminar before so I'm a little stuck for ideas. I would participate because it's a very cheap way for me to see what it's all about for a good cause!

I am interested in things like how to market your blog and how to make sense of all of your stats. I have all of these numbers but I've no idea what they mean or what to do with them! Of course, this might be too beginner and basic to sell.
