Pimp Your Blog - WordPress Hacks

Mark Angeletti has written a post on some essential WordPress tweaks, check them out at  WordPress - From Install to Pimped Out

This article will share some plugins, some code adjustments and some tweaks that will make your website more user-friendly, easier on your web server, and possibly increase your traffic.

I desperately need to do the printer-friendly one, a reader pulled me up about it earlier but I still haven’t found the time (design stuff takes me much longer than normal people!). The .htaccess hack is also worth looking at. Personally I don’t like hacking .htaccess so if my web host doesn’t sort this out for me (Dreamhost does) I use the No-WWW wordpress plugin!

I use the printer plugin on my travel blog. I’m not sure it’s being used, but I can see it being useful for a blog like this.

One word of warning - block out the printer URL in your robots.txt file, as this could lead to duplicate content..

Yeah I looked at plugins but avoided them due to dupe-content issues, I will check it out cheers

If you just create a print friendly CSS like mentioned in the article then you won’t have a problem with duplicate content.

For example, if you view my article in print preview, notice what you get; just a cleaned of version - no dupe-content.

Thanks for posting about this article! I find the conditional META tags and an extra Archive page idea pretty useful.

@Mark, yup I will have to do that

@Avinash, it’s funny with the meta tags, I thought they were old-school and didn’t work any more but I have noticed a couple of SEO guys I respect using them so who knows? :)

I tried wordpress for a day and I don’t like it. It doesn’t let me edit the CSS without paying, and it’s impossible to load javascript, which doesn’t allow me to use Badged.net.

I wouldn’t recommend Wordpress.com, I use the self-installed wordpress - it is just as easy to setup using a 1-click install with Dreamhost but you have so much more flexibility

    Chris,

This SEO stuff is really confusing at times. For a single optimization technique, two SEO types have different opinions and it happens most of the time!

@Vozzon: I’m completely agree with Chris. You didn’t like it because you didn’t use the full version of WordPress that can be downloaded here. Once you try the full version, you’ll forget using other blogging platform.

Yeah SEO is one of those topics you either have to be really into or just trust one or two experts for guidance. I choose the latter and whine to Aaron :)

Aaron is amazing! :) So are the people @ SEO Chat. I bought Aaron’s SEO Book in 2006 and have been reading SEO Chat articles since 2005. So far, I’m satisfied with whatever techniques I’ve learned and applied on my sites/blogs.

I forgot to add Brad Callen’s name in my previous comment. I must admit that Brad Callen’s articles and tips have boosted my SEO knowledge like a rocket. I’m Brad Callen’s fan since the day I had no idea about Aaron Wall.

I came to know about Aaron Wall when I was going to buy Brad Callen’s SEO Lite. The same day, I visited Aaron Wall’s blog and bought his SEO book. :)

Actually after my last post, I had my friend set up a word press blog on his dreamhost account for me. I actually like it a lot more than blogger.

Thanks for the tips and keep them coming, I’m slowly integrating them into my site as I get time.
