My problem is more that I don't actually know anybody in person with the technical skills that I need help with.

But if I did, I suppose I would need to pay them in clothes.

Creative collaboration is really the way forward with business/blogging/etc - but I agree with George that sometimes the service can be a little below par. It's also hard to set values to each individuals contribution.

The more we do it though the better we'll all become at it, the values will be easier to set and we'll stop looking at it as unpaid work and start seeing the benefits of getting the best person for the job rather than trying to do everything ourselves.

An example from my business is that I suck at project management (easily sidetracked by bright shiny objects) but I have strong skills in marketing and product development - I met someone with top PM skills who needed help marketing his new product - we now meet every 2nd Saturday morning and equal time is given to each business.

To expand the "links" idea, you can not only trade links but also reviews of other products and services.

Say you want to get a logo done. Maybe you can give the logo designer a testimonial, and a link from your site, and maybe even write up a review about their service and/or just tell your audience (newsletter, blog readers, website visitors) about how good it was to work with them. The biggest problem with this kind of trade is if the service sucks, and you weren't happy with them. You would need some sort of barter/trade agreement that allowed for you to back out of the review if the service was not performed up to some set standard.

Nice post. Off to stumble it, etc...

persuasion is a good skill, if you have the ability to command attention and drive it towards something that can be very helpful.

@Alex - Personality is an interesting one, I think that especially needs to be seen from the outside to be appreciated

@Matt - Flattery in the form of social media votes are definitely a valuable resource :)

I don't know if this is much of a resource, but flattery can be easily given in the hope of favors being bestowed.

Personality is also great asset (unless it is that same as reputation). Someone with great charisma and attitude can go a long way with person-to-person communications tasks like networking and marketing promotions.
