Chris - Great post! I'm in the middle of Timothy Ferriss' "4 Hour Work Week". For anyone who hasn't heard of it and wants to change their perceptions about wealth, time and their life in general, I highly recommend it. He talks about how money is relative to your freedom and happiness.

Rich People is Genius!
I said so because they simply can own the wealth and some amount of money that most people cannot make in their life. They are so different!

Every time I think I will be rich one day and different from others, I will laugh inside my heart. It nothing more happier that you can own something that people always dream at.

Of course, I will leverage on my wealth too to help people. If not it will be meaningless to own so much money.

Yes, good point Michael!

I have probably over simplified it a bit. But just recognizing some of my hang ups has helped me move on a lot, and it wasn't simple. It's an ongoing struggle through life, sorry I shouldn't have been so dismissive.

Mandy, that is easier said than done. It is extraordinarily difficult to see your own money behavior blind spots that are the result of how you were conditioned. And just because you can see some of them, it doesn't mean they no longer hold power over you. In many ways, it's like a smoker who knows he should quit but still smokes. And even when he finally tries to quit it takes many attempts before success is achieved. Dealing with your own financial psychology is like that. So, yeah, it's "the best thing to do," alright. Good luck! :)

Another great post Chris,

I think for me the biggest influence on my life when it comes to money and what I think about it, is my parents. They are the people that you learn from, and give you your first perception of money and how to feel about it.

The best thing to do is to ignore anything you have been taught as you've grown up, and start again to learn about money for yourself. That way you will lose all the stereotypes and not feel guilty anymore. That's what I have had to do and this article is a good starting place to help me along the way!

@Online Presence - glad you like it :)

@Matt - Agreed, if you don't believe then you are anchoring yourself to failure

@Jen - Yes as often is the case, bad stories sell more papers and get more TV viewers. Also jealousy causes people to not want to believe anything good about someone with more and journalists are not immune.

@Michael - Heh, I envy you if you find it easy :) Shoemoney definitely seems to have the secret and it is an interesting blog to read.

@Mike - It is amazing how many entrepreneurial people can talk about everything in business but money. Definitely seems to be a stumbling block people share. You are right, people don't want to seem greedy or grasping.

@Simonne - You have a healthy attitude I think, and seem blessed to always have what you need :) I have been similarly fortunate that something comes along to pay for unexpected bills

@Jason - It's a good way to look at it. I think I could go a few days without working ;)

@Matt - Oh yes, it all starts in the mind. When I look back over the last 10 years it seems while my standard of living (freedom, no boss, work I enjoy) has massively increased my income hasn't had quite the same massive shift and I have to think it is down to my beliefs.

@Forest - The key will be to not look at your blog as being the total source of income, can you use contacts, skills, knowledge etc and leverage that for income? Don't just think of advertising, expand your awareness to other revenue.

@David - Cool I will check it out

@Josef - Excellent, I will give it a review :)

Chris,

Interesting topic. We have been marketing a new book on Wealth Building. We have found that many people think about building wealth but almost never take action. The reason is because so many books just talk about wealth but don't provide the necessary tools and steps. We hope to help change that. Wealth is also very personal and is relative to ones own needs and wants.

Of course you can rely on the old adage -
if you are healthy you are wealthy.

If you would like a copy of our new book let me know and I will get one to you.

Wealth is also very personal and is relative to ones own needs and wants.

Of course you can rely on the old adage –
if you are healthy you are wealthy.

Chris
I like your ideas, some one else that thinks along the same lines is the columnist(blogger) calling himself "The Barefoot Investor"

He is Australian (as I am) but has a general outlook on Wealth.

Working in the UK as a Graphic Designer I was pretty well paid. However I have left a fair amount of debt in credit cards and overdrafts.

It was something that happened over years and I always expected I could deal with and in some ways it's fine. It is growing but it will have to stay there for the minute.

I moved to Montreal and reassessed my spending as my job is very low pay. I realised yesterday that I have money left over from my pay. Amazing!!!!!

I am just as happy earning less money.

My short term plans for blog earnings is to contribute to paying off UK debt but in long term I would like it to be my principal earnings enabling me to travel and live anywhere in the world.

At present I earn very little from my blog.

In regard to Money I keep thinking of the saying by Joe Schroeder, a favorite mentor of mine & that is just this...

" You can only make & retain money to the degree that your awareness allows
you to keep."

I believe that is why we hear many times of folks who have won a large Lotto prize ending up broke sometime later as they did not aquire the proper mindset
in order to handle the large some of money that suddenly came their way.

I do not believe $$ in & of itself can or will erase all our problems & give us a fairy tale life....I think that the same negative mindset that has kept many from attaining wealth in the first place (if not altered) would cause us problems if we did attain quick wealth.

I will be 52 this coming Monday & I am finding I have a LOT of things,,,attitudes, feelings, things I was taught, mindset etc,,etc,,,that I am Having to UNLEARN after all these years so I can NOW learn & assimilate new views such as Garrett has put forth so well in this series in such a wonderful way!

I believe I myself must 1ST be Changed before I can truly have & enjoy a life of Abundance.
