Think my level of commentators is such that I can do it all personally at the moment, I have some way to go to compete with the level of comments here. I guess I can give time to the personal approach right!

@Patrick - Somehow I missed it too until that forum thread :)

@Ashish - Yeah I get compliments from it too :)

@George - It's a nice reminder, especially as I could be using one of a few computers when I leave the comment

@Adam - I only installed it on this one, just in case it blows up (if it will have problems it will be this one with all the comments it gets)

@mark - The personal touch is always better :)

@Kate - I will keep an eye on it but so far no crashes ... at least none that I know of. I do get a lot of comments, perhaps it is partly down to the web host?

@Blogging Experiment - Great stuff :D

@Jason - Glad to be of service :)

@Skellie - I would always go for the personal approach but this is the best I can do unless my number of comments reduces - after all I do answer them personally in the comment area :)

@LAChick - Ah, nice :)

While we're on this topic of automated responses. I saw a printed 'with compliments' slip yesterday which takes this concept to a whole new level.

There were several boxes down the side with things like 'invoice enclosed' or 'please pay your account' and the last box was for 'thank you'. Laughed for ages about that one.

I'm not sure I agree with the effectiveness of this.

Most of us can tell the difference between an automated thank you and a personal one. The reason why thank you e-mails from bloggers work is because you appreciate that they've taken the time to thank you personally for your comment. An automated e-mail is just a nicety sent by a computer.

It's probably better than nothing but I wouldn't appreciate it as much as a real response.

I think a better strategy would be to create a generic template you can copy and paste into the e-mail and then just add a sentence or so responding to the reader's comment. It'd seem just like an original response even though it takes 20% of the work.

I used this on my site about a month and a half ago and it worked great, but after a week or so crashed my site. It took me a while to identify the cause of the crash particularly because the problem seemed to be intermittent with the plugin working fine at times. I decided in the end to uninstall it though.

John Chow also wrote about the problems he had with this plugin, but that was because of the number of comments he has on his site http://www.johnchow.com/misbehaving-comment-relish-plugin/

Chris, hope it keeps working fine for you.

I sent first time commenters welcome emails all by hand! I did that the first three months then just couldn't keep up with it - now I find this!

I sort of forgot about this plug-in after reading that thread on the forums. Thanks for reminding me about it, Chris. I think I'll install it on both of my blogs.

It could be a good tool for the corporate blog I'm working on, too. Another way of engaging customers, and making them feel that we do care about their business (because, we do!).

I have received a lot of those automated emails welcoming me to blogs. I didn't know what plug-in was being used. Thanks for the information.

Whenever I get the welcome emails I feel more obligated to go back and visit the blogs. I am curious to know what your email looks like...
