I would prefer search engine traffic rather than any social bookmarking traffic. Be it digg i really dont care. It can get u traffic but it doesnt get u readers. Building a relationship through seo is much better. I get comments from readers who dont have websites and they mail me back asking some questions when i respond them. Thats better than even digg lol

Hi Chris,

With the name of my wellness blog I hope to convey my interest in responsible healthy living and promote the concept of being in control of our own mental and physical well-being.

I enjoy getting your email each morning... it's like a personal invitation! I would visit your blog anyway because I have so much to learn about blogging!

@Chris - Yes definitely, adding a blog brings old dusty websites back to life. Let's face it, why would anyone visit most websites in the first place and then would they think of any reason to return?

@Melt - Indeed, trust is vital, hard to gain but so easily broken.

@Colbs - Rather than PR look at your traffic and where it is coming from, is it going up or down, which is the best source, why? Link to what makes sense for your readers/users. Get more links into your stuff. Don't sweat the PR :)

@Paula - I have never published my salary :)

@George - Agreed, especially when you think traffic is not the only benefit which is not something you can say about some marketing methods

@Rajesh - Blogs (done right) can be so much more immediate in creating visible results, yes your traffic might be only a trickle initially but I know people with beautiful websites that only ever receive one visitor - the owner! :)

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the great post. Right catch! My company site is live for the last 7 years and still I can not see it on the reasonably front page. I started a blog just 3 months before and I get quite a lot of traffic to my blog already. Blogging is really good.

Nice post. I have a friend who turned one of his popular sites into a blog, because it was easier to maintain. He has had a good boost in traffic from doing that.

I think the fact that blogs can really be useful for providing extra traffic to your business is the reason that just about every business should have a blog. It's certainly not necessary, but I think it makes getting free traffic to your site a lot easier.

Well, Chris, I'm praying my new post gets 20,000 pageviews or much, much more. By the way, do you post your income? I don't think you made my list: Paula's List of Blogger Salaries...Are you on the list?

I don't even think you're on my "prayer list" of bloggers, though.

Hey Chris, great post again.

I have had a product site for 4 years and am over hiring SEOs and wasting money. So, I have started researching it my self and started a blog a little over three months ago mainly for trafic to my product site.

After really listening to you and Aaron W. I started creating original posts about my industry and found an interesting niche with in my industry, long story short I have found a new passion because of the realism expressed by the real bloggers.

My blog has only 8 subscribers but a PR of 5/10 with in 3 months. I was very surprised to see this PR so soon, but I think I figured out why.

I have been studing linking structures and am still a little confused about the whole deal but I think this is what happened, I was putting targeted outbound links with in the blog posts to specific pages on the product pages where I have good original content as well. I have a link from my home page on the product site to the blog and I think the blog stole my PR from my product site. Thank G it was only 1/10 that it dropped butit still hurts.

I am now going to remove the link to the blog on my product site and restructure my product site internal links (because I think there are to many outbound links, even though they are to 7 & 8 PR sites) as well set up link structure of about 6 sites with PRs of over 5/10.

What do you think? I am starting to learn that blogging and the internet is truly about sharing what you learn and paying it forward.

If I am wrong I would be grateful if you corrected my theory.

If I am wrong I would be grateful if you corrected my theory.

Great post Chris. IMHO, authority/credibility is probably most important in any blog. Knowing that what you write is factual and true will not only get people interested, but they will also trust your content and will come back for more.

I don't mean to say that any of the other points you mentioned are not equally important...

Chris,

I run my band's website. We're not that big (yet ;)) and the website receives little traffic. A couple months ago I added a blog and started to post about practices and the new studio were are in the process of building. After a couple of months I noticed a definite increase in traffic on the main site (most of which is channeled from our blog). Our blog was the boost we needed to start drawing in new readers that otherwise would have never found us. I think blogs can be a positive augmentation to a stagnant website.
