I hear a lot about Frequency of update. Is it really that important to get Google Authority compared to other factors? When you post quality contents, is frequency that important?

Hi Chris, thanks for this WOW! post. I knew I subscribed to your blog for a reason and I am breaking this down into chunks. Some of it I already knew and there's always more to learn. The mind-map is awesome and want a bigger than A4 size of it on the wall so am heading off to the printers for a poster size. Bookmarked and shared as the more webmasters/bloggers that read this, the better.

In every business, its all about authority, credibility and trust which makes a business successful. Even in online business where their is no physical interaction, this 3 are very important. But talking about search engine results, this 3 are also needed. Ask yourself, why would google rank you high? You need to gain authority from people because this authority leads to good contienous traffic and backlinks for you.

Hi Chris, I agree that content is the most important but sometimes I am surprised by what articles get the most reads on my site. By far the most read article is my About Me page. Next is an article about What Is A Domain Name. This made no sense to me but even more surprising was an article about How To Take Pictures For Your Web Site that was very popular for years and still is.

I take a different approach to the comments. While I am not about to give spammers the links they so want there is no reason to take down most of the spam comments. It is really easy to de-link them with any number of plugins if you use a wordpress blog. (I can't speak to other platforms but it still isn't hard without plugins).

My reasoning behind letting many of these stand with the links removed is google seems to reward posts with lots of comments. I have some sites which only carry pr 1 or 2 but have a fair number of posts with PR 3, 4, and 5+ they only thing different about those is the amount of comments. While I can't prove it helps, lots of comments with the links gone certainly isn't counter productive either.

This is definitely a print-out-and-read-over post, Chris! One point you've made here in particular is one I think is often overlooked -- the role played by the age of the domain when it comes to Google Authority. That's why I firmly believe that, for what little it costs these days, it makes sense to buy your domain name for a new project as soon as you can settle on one, even if you're nowhere near ready to launch in full.

Great advice Chris. The thought that springs to mind is that following these tips is about staying ahead of everyone else - if all bloggers took the advice it would level the playing field, and Google won't let that happen. It's a continually evolving field of play as the rules are changing whilst the game is still being played.
Perhaps a disruptive technology, or serious contender to Google are the only ways to create a new gold rush?
(A couple of mixed metaphors in there!)

Wow! What a great post. It's funny because I was just talking about Google authority and links on my blog....then I come here and see yours. Makes mine look so tiny! But, I am learning from the best, so will soon be right up there with you! ;)

I'm thinking I should update my post with a link to this one since you have laid out everything so thoroughly. Would that be cool?

Thanks again, Chris. You're such an asset to the blogosphere.

I'm glad I'm finally getting back into reading blogs, after five months as a new dad. :)

Just wanted to add my voice to "Great article, Chris!" I've always been a big advocate of organic growth- but your insights and explanations have made the whole picture much more clear to me. I'm clipping this one.

You rock. You know that, already, but you do.

Solid Chris!

A clear message I see is: There are no shortcuts to building your brand equity the right way....

In fact I'll go as far as to say "you don't want any shortcuts"...

Can the system be gamed? Sure...but if you are in the business for the right reasons and your sales are a byproduct of your authority and altruism and not some short term tactics, then you don't want and won't need to game the system.

Really nice piece Chris :)
