Goals Meme

I am a sucker for memes, one day I will have to say “enough is enough” and just stop responding to them :) But not today, I was tagged with Gotta Get Goals

In a new post, write about the top 5 to 10 goals that you “gotta get” so that you can truly say you have achieved your wildest dreams in life. These have to be your best, most exclusive, and over-the-top goals.

My goals … hmmm.

I think it is good to have goals but for me they are a private thing.

What I can share with you is my blogging goals:

  1. Build a thriving and vibrant community
  2. Truly help people with their online marketing and blogging
  3. Partner, mentor and assist bloggers (to extend further than my own little field of influence so I can help more people)
  4. Positively impact the blog world (by doing the above)
  5. Have fun, learn a lot and earn a living doing it

How I will achieve those five points can be summed up as  “learn, process, assimilate, share, support”.

Measuring my progress towards the goals could be tricky. My main metrics are blog subscribers and feedback. The number and quality of comments is a big indicator. Some plans are brewing. It will be interesting how things are impacted when I introduce the money factor …

I’ve said before that I really do believe what you put out you get back. If you “do good stuff” then your own needs will eventually be taken care of. Remains to be seen how well this philosophy works. So far it has worked out pretty well.

Am I achieving what I set out to do? Early days. Hit a bit of a speed bump for a bit there but I think this new blog is helping me get back on track.

A meme is a unit of thought transmitted from one person to another. The term was coined by Richard Dawkins to be a kind of “thought gene”. In blogging terms it is just anything that is spread from one blog to another like a chain letter, usually quizzes, surveys, etc where you complete it then tag someone else for them to continue.

Chris, You made the comment that for you goals are a private thing. I see that in several other blogs as well. Why do you think that? For me, I’m finding that I get greater motivation from putting my goals out there. Sort of committed to what I declare. I don’t mean an arrogant boast but just something to help me be accountable. I would be really interested in hearing your thoughts.

    Chris,

The first time I got tagged with a meme I had a silent groan thinking that MySpace had somehow followed me to my blog!

Since then, I have seen some value in them, however, and Alex Shalman (the originator of this meme) is proving to be one of the “do good stuff” kind of people, so thanks for hopping on board.

Using my own blog as a pseudo-measure of success, I can agree that actually measuring that success can be easier said than done.

However, I can also say this. In the last hour alone I have laughed out loud, smiled from ear to ear, nodded my head in vigorous agreement, and even felt “warm and fuzzy” that my blogging efforts were having a positive influence on people’s lives.

And that’s just in the last hour. I’ll take that. :)

    Thanks for playing along, Chris!

@Dave - Some of my goals are public. My goal to lose weight, my goal to move my family to Canada, etc. I have learned though to keep some goals private. Unfortunately not everybody has your best interests at heart, in fact I have found there are some people who find others successes distasteful or personally offensive. It would be nice to think this was an isolated thing contained to my small part of the world but somehow I think these people exist all over.

@Aaron - The best memes get you thinking about things and in ways that you wouldn’t ordinarily, this is one of them :)

Chris, thanks for the clarification. Makes sense. I would be nice to think that everyone was nice but alas your words are too true. That being said, it’s encouraging to read what you did share.
