The Three Dimensions of Blogging: The Vital Combination Every Blog Must Have
Why do I answer every single comment made here? A couple of people have asked why I did my Reader Appreciation post. Some have even implied that I have a big enough audience to not need to do this. What is it about comments I am so obsessed about? There are three critical aspects that make a blog great. Lose any one aspect and you have made it so much harder to be a success. The simple truth is without my reader community a massive part of my blog would be lost. Without comments blogs are sadly … [Read more...]

My Comment Policy
A commenter called John asked why I "censor" comments. I was taken aback. Obviously the implication is I pick and choose what appears on my blog. Of course I do, but not based on if the commenter agrees with me or not. I thought I would take a moment to explain how I go about approving or deleting comments under moderation here on this blog. First I need to be clear. This is my blog. I set the rules. I reserve the right to display, edit or delete any comments as I see fit. It's my name above … [Read more...]
Where To Find Images For Your Blog
Andrew Ferguson has posted up a great post on where to find Great Free Photos for Your Blog Knowing where to look is just as important as what you find. I know most people's first instinct is "Google Images!" Ignore that instinct. Google Images is useful for some things, but not really for this. There's too much of a legal quagmire regarding usage rights and let's be honest, the photos you find are pretty lame.I know my posts would benefit from more images (or any images!). Good advice to … [Read more...]
Putting a Value on NoFollow Links
This week I was pulled up on my comment links having the default "no-follow" attribute. This led to me installing the Wordpress "do-follow" plugin and also to questions about if no-followed links have any value.First of all let me explain what "no-follow" means. The idea was hatched to prevent spammers profiting from carpet-bombing blogs with their links. Adding the "rel=nofollow" attribute to comment links was supposed to tell the search engines "I don't trust this link one bit, do not give it … [Read more...]
ScribeFire Released
I hear from Raj at Performancing there is a New Scribefire for Firefox (previously called Performancing for Firefox). Jed has been replaced by Chris Fincke who comments in the thread that he is a current Netscape developer, which is cool. I'm glad the tool is still going, not out of any sense of loyalty to the old crew but because I use it daily. From what I can tell Scribefire is PFF with more orange and a new name, but I expect once Chris settles in there will be more developments. You can … [Read more...]
Should You Post or Should You Comment?
Since my post on the benefits of commenting I have been asked this question a few times so I thought it must be something bloggers puzzle over. Here is the question as asked by "Haacked" in the original thread:Sometimes I find I am writing a loooong comment in response. So I abandon the comment and write a blog post instead linking back to the original. In your opinion, do you like that better? Or would you rather (hypothetically speaking) I leave a short comment anyways, along with the blog … [Read more...]
