Interesting survey:
(a) didn't know that blogging has such a long history
(b) data showing the surge in recent years is quite expected though; however, I wonder how many blogs are being updated regularly.

This was a tricky survey question to answer: my response was based on the year that I started up my very first little Blogger blog, but I hovered over it for a while because - depending on how we're defining 'blogging' - it might be fair to say that an earlier website was effectively a blog in that it was updated almost daily and had an attendant forum to allow conversation in lieu of the ability to have comments. On the other hand, back then I wasn't even aware that 'blogging' existed!

Pinyo, the answer depends on your perspective. If "blogging as we know it" refers to search engine optimization and writing about topics for the sole purpose of making money, then, no, it's a fairly recent phenomenon.

But if you consider a "blog" is an abbreviation of "web log," online diaries have existed for 15+ years, dating to CompuServe forums, Prodigy bulletin board systems, and the like which I commented on earlier in this thread.

@Chris I was only teasing and glad I didn't win.

I actually already have a copy of your most fabulous book, so it would be indeed a shame if I had won.

Good points made about people who start blogging and then give up. I know I did that a few times before I really got into it, so that probably is a big factor.

@Kelly - Hopefully it will be an annual thing, I do want to see how the numbers change :)

@Ashok - I think the biggest factor seems to be sticking with it, perhaps the successful bloggers are more stubborn than talented ;)

@Karen - There are also more alternatives to provide an outlet, such as Twitter

@Vicky - The prize winners are on the /survey page, better luck next time :)

@Talking Books - Congrats and thanks for taking part :)

@Patricia - Yeah I guess it is like anything but on "internet time" (haven't used that buzzword phrase in years!)

@Adam - Yes, you could be right in that my traffic could have a large number of beginners, but I also think what people said above about most people giving up is a factor

@Daniel - Totally, there will be many who start up hoping to emulate John Chow or Darren then give up when the cash doesn't appear

@Ari - In my talks with other bloggers it seems many who joined early on gave up, either burned out, as the medium changed to be away from their ideals, or because they moved back offline. Would be an interesting question for sure.

@Panzer - I think many people could empathize with your wilderness years :)

@Bill - Yes, I did a poll before and there were loads of people who "registered domain as a good idea then sat on it" :)

Yes, I'd like to see:

1. People who started a blog, quit, deleted it and let the domain expire.
2. People who started a blog and it has been sitting for at least 1 year with no updates.

I started on the blogging bandwagon back in January 2006 with a personal blog but didn't really keep up with it until 2007 when I started my personal finance blog where my passion about achieving financial freedom was able to sustain me further than my first blog.

But the roots of "blogging" for me was in 1996 when Singapore liberalised the internet service provider market and I signed up for my first internet account with Cyberway internet and created my own "homepage". That homepage also died a natural death from 1997 to 2006 so there was 9 years in the "wilderness" before I found my voice on the net again. ;-)

Interesting and real results, the world needs MORE bloggers.

Chris, the statistics are not surprising given both pop culture and the target audience for your blog. But perhaps a more intriguing stat would be to correlate blogging longevity versus Internet longevity.

For instance, I started blogging in late-2004 on livejournal and migrated to the blogger API in 2007, with more intensity over the past six months. But I've been online since the early 1980s via Prodigy and CompuServe and the days of 300-baud modems.

Judging from questions I occasionally see on Blogger's help forums, I'll hazard a guess that few new bloggers (like me) have been online as long as me.
