Blog Memes and Links For Charity

The other day I challenged you to come up with a good Meme. Get my attention and as well as links and a help in getting your meme some traction, you will also get a copy of my forthcoming (really!) ebook.

First, because I am a sucker for charity, isย  … the Charity Link Meme!

The idea is to spread link love to a whole bunch of charities. Nice ๐Ÿ™‚

Here is the original list …

… here is my five (UK charities for balance)

And the people I am going to tag (though I know at least half will hate me for it ๐Ÿ˜‰ )…

So that’s all you have to do – think of a good meme and tag me. If I see it in technorati and find it interesting I will promote it here and send you a free ebook (when it is finished). Get memeing ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. That’s a wonderful idea! But as you say yourself, local charities are important too, and personally I would want Amnesty International on that list.

  3. Ok, now I’m confused and I thought I understood it.

I thought a meme would take a list that would hopefully grow as each person continued the list. For example, I think I was second at SEOREfugee.

I took his list, added to it with both charities and tags, then you would take mine, do the same and so on and so on.

If the tags changed with each person that joined , how does the tag list grow?

    Sorry for being dense.

  5. Thanks Chris! I’ve never started one of these things so it’s pretty cool to watch unfold. Hopefully it continues to spread.

  7. The charity meme kind of stuck out for me as well. I think it will be a big hit in the blogosphere.

    Nice pick.

  9. You know, even though I’m not tagged, I might just have to post this on my blog when I get home tonight. It’s such a “good natured” meme, and it’s got a certain amount of potential to get people to say, “Hey! I didn’t know there was a charity for that! I want to support the cause!” and make a donation.

I think I just might have to throw a few Canadian charities onto that list tonight.

  13. even though I wasn’t tagged, can I just start the meme on my blog by copying the list?

I’m not sure when the meme will arrive to me especially being new in the blogoshere..

  15. Ditto on Kzainul’s question “even though I wasn’t tagged, can I just start the meme on my blog by copying the list?”

Excuse my naive question… just want to make sure that my understanding is correct… The idea is to improve the search ranking of specific charities. Each blogger that lists the charities’ improves the ranking of the charities. Blogs that are heavily read will likely result in more “hits.” Did I understand meme (in the blogsphere and Web world) correctly?

Separately, what is it that one is looking up in Technorati?

    Thanks…

  17. OK, while most people wait to be tagged you don’t have to, if you like the meme just run with it. Curtesy would require you to link back to the original blogger though if you know who started it.

Some memes have questions you have to answer, others are lists you have to copy and paste and add to, each meme is different. In fact the only thing in common between memes is that they propogate from one blog/person to another somehow. With this one each person who continues the list copies the list from the person before them as far as I understand it. Had it not been for charity I would not have taken part at all, I am not a fan of this type of meme.

As far as looking up in technorati, what I mean by that is every other day I look in technorati to see if anyone has mentioned my blog. If I see someone new has linked to my blog I look to see if I have to respond somehow, ie. I have been “tagged”. I use the link over in my sidebar, “Blogs that link here”.

  19. Man I’m feeling pretty stupid but its just not clicking for me in one respect.

Ok I see the charities being passed from blog to blog but not the tagged people.

SEORefugee tagged 5 people, Then I tagged 5 (plus his 5) Then you tagged 5 totally different people. Shouldnt the tagged people be carried over from each blog?

If they dont, you’re only going to be tagged once? Am I missing something?

  21. You tag the people you want to do it next. Also link to the person who started it, or at least started your branch if the thing has been around a while and the origin is consigned to history. If someone else contributes something particularly interesting feel free to reference them but the only links as a participant you can *expect* are from those you tagged. “So-and-so tagged me with ____ meme”. Now there might be memes that work where everyone links everyone else, but that is not something I would be keen to take part in as it would mean too much effort ๐Ÿ™‚

  23. “Now there might be memes that work where everyone links everyone else, but that is not something I would be keen to take part in as it would mean too much effort…”

It also borders on link farming, which would make me less than willing to participate in such a meme.

  33. I’m also a sucker for charity! In fact, I started a humble little charity-based blog recently – it’s called The Giving Hands (but I have yet to determine the direction I want it to go).

    Any suggestions?

Ouh yea, will take grab this meme ๐Ÿ™‚
