I think Suzanne got it right on why people don't take action; and it's certainly not helped by the leaders of the world. My country, Australia, will be the first to suffer the brunt of climate change's effects, yet it was our prime minister who said that the economy was just as important as the ecology and drastic action would impact on that balance. Pfft.

Hey Chris,

I think another reason people get defensive and angry about the topic of the environment is because it frightens them. I know some folks like this and they deal with fear and anger by wanting to control conditions or people around them. The evidence is getting so obvious that they can't really deny it anymore, but it's overwhelming so they don't want to think about it at all.

The truth is that one person can make a difference. It can be a big one or a small one. We can create a backyard habitat for birds and animals, back positive legislation, clean up rivers and streams, recycle...it doesn't matter. Whatever we appreciate and want to conserve, protect, and enjoy in our own neighborhood is possible. Bigger things are possible, too, but definitely in our own homes and towns.

I'm with you, Erica -- I'm an optimist, too. We can do amazing things when we decide we want to and there are so many who are already working to preserve and protect the environment, who are paving the way with environmentally friendly products, technologies, and ideas. There are so many ways established now that we can join in with to preserve and nurture our world and more coming all the time.

Great post, Chris! Very thoughtful.

As a new kid on the block in the blog world, I have to say it's a good feeling to have found this site last month. Kinda like having a blogging big brother (even though I'm the older one) to show me the ropes. I had no idea there was something called Blog Action Day. I almost thought it was too late to write a post about it late yesterday. Then I realized that if we all say it's too late, it will be. So post I did:
www.wellnesscoach.com/blog-action-day-its-never-too-late-71.html

I guess I'm an optimist -- i do believe the journey of 1000 miles begins with one step, whether it's a blogging journey or an environmental journey. Thanks for stepping out there, Chris.

Joel makes a good point, and I'm hoping that legislation will be happening in the near future that stops these big corporations from their destructive ways. It is important to keep people thinking, just as you said Chris, being a conscious consumer will make you more apt to wanting to consume responsibly.

I'm working for a coalition that is hoping to keep the demanding standards set up by the energy bill right now in the final bill. The standards would call for 15% renewable electricity standard and 35mpg fuel economy standard (both by 2020). We have a chance to call on our government to make a real change and not succumb to the auto lobbies who would like to see these standards lowered (among other self interested groups). We can all help by signing the petition available at www.energybill2007.org. This is another real chance to make a change!

Joanna said, "Chris, I think part of the reason people get hot under the collar is because they don't like others telling them what to do. And a lot of the environmental debate has become like that, so others switch off or get defensive."

I agree, many people are like this. Unfortunately, though, someone needs to tell them what to do - they won't stop on their own or through telepathy. We have to keep being vocal and ram it down the ignorant sons-of-bitches throats until they stop or legislation stops them! Seeing as environmental friendly living is not good for the big corporations, I don't see legislation happening, ever.

Even though climate change is the major issue we face, it's issues like the one you raise that will help us to reduce our dependence on resources and make us think about how we make stuff. In my opinion, the best book ever written on this topic is "Cradle to Cradle - Remaking the Way We Make Things" if anyone's interested :)

Interestingly, the most viewed post I've ever written for my blog was about 'plastic shopping bags' and the alternatives available. Seems people are interested in making a good choice if the information is readily available.

Good post Chris. Nice approach. I have been a curious consumer for a number of years now. Not only does it help the health of the planet, but it sure has had an impact on my own health!

Good post Chris. Nice approach. I have been a curious consumer for a number of years now. Not only does it help the health of the planet, but it sure has had an impact on my own health!

Great post Chris, you are exactly correct - the first step to take HAS to be the awakening of the issue. One can't fight a battle they know nothing about.

It is kind of controversial to say that blogging helps when the facts also reveal that the Internet itself is a huge pollution factor.

I'm for all the awareness/consciousness-raising we can get.

Action matters in huge way, of course. But no one's going to be motivated to act until they're aware of the impact of their actions, right?

And yes, there are many who are making money at the expense of the earth, but who's to say that campaigns like this won't reach them? Or, reach their kids, who will join in the enviro-movement as a part of their rebellion against their parents? ;-)
