Hi Chris,

This is the first blog post of yours that I've read (found you via a link on Bob Souer's blog), and I enjoyed reading every sentence!

Great advice and candidly communicated. These pitfalls are common but as you've said, can be avoided too.

Thank you for the insightful commentary,

Stephanie Ciccarelli

@Ashish, yes definitely have to stay relevant

@Mark, I tend to stick to the 80/20% rule, once in a while it's ok to get personal but people come for the topical content not to hear about your cats :O)

Great points. The "lack of focus sends mixed signals" point rings so true. It's too easy for a business or subject matter focused blog to wax too personal. A true personality should shine through, don't get me wrong, but a clear mission should be established and followed for the blog.

Great points.

One more point can be "make ur posts sale"...Meaning if dont keep you posts updated as the industry changes google will think its old and ppl will not come to your post rather go to the post which has updates news

Excellent points. I hadn't considered the free blog tools, while it is possible to create a brand using them (even wordpress.com allows domains now) you have more flexibility with setting up your own.

Chris - I certainly endorse all the points you make.

A couple of additional thoughts:

- If your blog is a business blog it is important to ensure that elements of your corporate identity are reflected in your business blog. Your corporate or visual identity is an element that expresses your personal brand.

- Using one of the free blog tools is not what I would recommend as that suggests you are not serious about blogging. Investing in customising you blog to reflect your corporate identity is going to enhance your brand.

And to your point relating to keeping your audience in mind, remember that strong brands build community so consider what actions you can take to build a community of subscribers who will want to keep coming back for more.

@Ron I see the same thing, I think another reason is many larger companies have a revolving door of staff so they either feel they need an impact RIGHT NOW or they think whatever happens someone else will have to clear up

Hey Chris, this is a great read! I really enjoyed going through it.

I agree with you in all of the points. I'd like to comment on one, the SHORT-TERM THINKING one. Although not the most flashy or hot, I think this is an ailment many brand managers have as of today. They get so caught up in daily activities that they forget to see beyond and into the real brands meaning and purpose.

Keep up the great work.
Thanks,
Ron.

Chris, all your points are right on. Good read. I think point 9 is often way overlooked by small businesses.

Branding is a lot about building trust. Many of the other points you made illustrate that - consistency, focus, effort, and leadership for instance.

One of the sure-fire ways to kill a brand is to build trust in all these ways and then drop the ball when it comes to delivering.
