Chris, you are spot on. No matter how confident we appear to be we all fear failure or rejection, its the major stumbling block for people making life changing decisions.

From my coaching the second biggest hurdle is procrastination, maybe the subject of a future post?

One of the reasons why I think people always tend to hold back is because a lot of us are scared of criticism, of failure, of taking risks and not knowing what's going to happen after such bold move. But then again, the irrevocable truth remains; you can't get a seal of approval from everyone all the time.

Thank you for reminding me that there’s nothing to fret about. It's a matter of knowing where to find the best opportunities. Take social media as an example, it offers various different platforms we can maximize to broaden our horizons. It allows us to freely exchange ideas as well receive and offer help at the same time. Who knows? One positive feedback might just send you flying to the moon.

I know it might take a lot of courage for some, but would you rather settle for mediocrity and achieve nothing? Of course not. Let's all crawl out from our shell, take a brave move forward and together we can conquer the world. It might not be an easy journey but it would definitely be more fulfilling. Thanks for the encouragement!

Hey Chris,

My biggest problem is the putting yourself “out there” part.

I have just done only my second video for my blog being quite shy it was hard for me but you have to get over, it only took half an hour for a two and a half min video but I did it at least.

Although my blog is still quite young one of my first posts was about opening links in new windows, this was done after I mentioned to someone that he should do this on his blog and he said "how do I do that".

As I said then,it's amazing what you forget you didn't know.

You will always know more than someone and if you can help by giving them that information then you should.

Thanks,

James

Thanks for the great post Chris. Sometimes its the journey itself that holds me back - taking too long to get there! But I remind myself that any place worth going is worth waiting for and while I wait to get myself up to a level where people believe my words are actually worth listening to I guess I will just continue to write and share them because ultimately that's why I do it all.... I think :)

2009 has certainly been my year to get outside of my comfort zone. I have started blogging in earnest, dived into social media and expanded my network of friends tremendously. The steps I have taken have not always been easy ones because I tend to be a very quiet person to the outside world. Becoming "authentic" with a public image has been frightening yet liberating.

I love the interaction that social media has brought to my small world and I have found that I do have a voice. I tend to naturally be a giver to others but find it difficult to accept help from others. A dear friend once told me that when I didn't accept her help I was robbing her of a blessing.

Thanks for sharing this adventure with me (virtually of course and probably with no knowledge on your part that you had a hand in it) and encouraging me to get past the "first stumbling block is fear of putting yourself “out there”.

@Jared - Yup, helping people is its own reward

@batteryoung - Glad you liked it

@John - That's the thing, it takes a little courage at the start but before long you get so much positive encouragement you get your own momentum

In agreement with your email linking to this post, and I would say that success is what it feels like when you know that you have helped someone else fix a problem, achieve a sale, complete a task or some other positive thing.
By the way Chris, is that you being your true awesome self on Twitter with that slightly less than convincing Santa hat and beard?

I have subscribed to your site for quiet some time (through a different email address), but this is one of the posts that resonates with me on many levels because I write and speak about establishing an identity for yourself and then sharing the "who you are," with the world. Not only do you owe all of this GIVING to the world, but you OWE it to yourself. When you have the opportunity to provide value through a message, product, or simply your presence, this will bring incredible levels of joy to your life. I often find that people are always so focused on the WHATS IN IT FOR ME mentality and as a result they lose connection with giving for the sake of giving, which will always come full circle at some point in time. There is truly nothing as rewarding as seeing someone smile as a result of something that you provided to them. This does not need to be tangible and instead could be belief that they did not have in themselves. At all of my seminars, I always tell the audience that I see something in them that they do not see in themselves. This might sound quirky or cliche, but it is the truth. When you look someone in the eyes (whether it is one-on-one or groups of 1000+) you are able to see their true identity, which is often overlooked when they look in the mirror. Express your feelings to the people in your world and watch how rewarded you feel...

The curious thing is that we know so much, and don't really know how much that is. I know I could help more people, but it's hard to understand what they need.

For example, it's absolutely floored me that I've had to help 3 people figure out RSS and Google Reader over the last month. Stuff I can do in seconds... which other people can't even conceive of.

About 3 years ago I became disenchanted with the 8+ hr workdays and the 2+ hr commute I was doing 6 days a week. It all started when I was going off to work and my kids asked me "Daddy can you work from home?" I did a lot of soul-searching and realized my cushy salary and vacation time cannot compare to living ans raising my children. Mom stays home to school them (she's a UC Grad in Education) and I am still looking for a way to work from home.

Hence, my comment to you. I am planning on launching daddyworkfromhome January 1,2010. It will chronicle my quest and endeavor to bring work home and begin living again.

Hi again Chris
I like what Tomas Stonkus has written and can relate to that. As for that secret sauce, here's something we've all heard before but reading it one more time won't hurt:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

From " A Return to Love" by Marianne Williamson.

Reading this daily really gets me going because I feel like I can conquer the world that day.

Fear holds many of us back from doing things that could change our lives. I am stuck in the "comfort zone" with a regular salary, bills paid, nice holidays, home comforts and part of me wants to keep that lifestyle, part of me wants to be a success in business.

Hopefully in 2010 I can find that true awesome self.

Dear Chris:

The more I live and the more I experience the more I realize how true that statement is. We truly owe to the world to be the best that we can be. If do not do that then we are hurting ourselves and we are hurting those others around us!

I took me a while to find a reason to be awesome, because I was thinking to myself: it does not matter if I am awesome who cares; I don't care if I am awesome. But then I realized that it is not about me! It is about others.

You see our life without others is meaningless. Other people create context for us. That is why the best reason to be awesome is to help others!

Best,
Tomas

P.S. As a step to bring the best out of me to help others, I just downloaded your free e-book about creating killer flagship content. I cannot wait to get started!

@Gabe - Yup, you are not going to be able to connect with everyone, and to be honest, it will be a really diluted, generic offering that does :) Best to target the people you can really help and who are open to being helped - everyone will be much happier with that arrangement :)

Chris,

This is all very true. I felt this way for quite some time, but then decided, so what if some people don't agree with me. They aren't the "ideal" audience anyway.

But for those who want the help and advise, the more the merrier and I'm more than happy to spill it.

Cheers,
Gabe
