Hi Chris,
Thanks for this. As always, the obvious answers are the best ones.

I'm writing a book on customer based growth which came from an idea that one of my clients suggested as a way to capture all of the ideas that I come up with and use with clients.

To ask your customers, obvious but always the best and easiest way to gain insights.

Thanks again,

Adrian

The idea of asking a question is so simple. I guess the bible does say "ask and it shall be given you". And it works both ways...for me as a blogger when people ask me questions and also when I do the asking. The basis of brainstorming I think.

Yep, keep your eyes and ears open, and the ideas come to you. Maybe not at first, but once you get some audience, or tap in to the right communities, you'll find that you're discovering people's needs on a daily basis.

Easily half of my blog posts and product ideas come from emails people send me, questions asked in forums, or comments left on my blogs.

Simple and yet many of us often forget that in the sphere, we are writing to provide information for others. Asking a question is definitely one of the easiest ways to figure out what to do next.

Hi Chris, because you asked:

Four years ago I was thinking of writing a book to try and make the world a better place for my son (I know-but you got to try, right?) I read my first "blog" and joined writer's blogs and Forums. I learned about Agents, Genres, Publishing, Grammar... Action step: Started a book, joined a national and local writer's group....

Transformation: Seth Godin wrote about publishing online instead of print. That lead to learning about blogs in general and writing blogs in particular.... Action: joined blogs about blogging....

You probably see where this is going. In my effort to keep peeling the onion:

Transformation: What? Some bloggers are making money? I then had to learn about social media and marketing?

Transformation: What? Some freelancers can get paid for writing?Learned about freelancing, white papers...and dug deeper into inbound/outbound marketing, branding, lists....

Transformation: There is conflicting advice: to-dos, don't-do's... Met some amazing people and talents online. Saw some connections to my field. Action: Inspired to become a "thought leader" in my field, passed on what I learned about social media to Linchpins in my field around the country.

Transformation: Began learning about how to mechanically set up a blog, a business, apps, plugins, tech stuff, free blog vs. owned blog... Action: I learned web designers cost more than I can afford--they deserve it--just not in my budget.

Transformation: I'm now smarter; I've learned valuable lessons in fields I've never before explored. In my next life I want to be in marketing (who knew?)

AND THAT IS WHERE I AM STUCK. I can't find a marketable connection and still reach my goal of trying to make the world a better place in my small niche. I accept my limitations--I am not capable of the technical blog set-up. (I understand this is unfathomable to a tech person, but trust me, my husband has to change the clocks for Daylight Savings Time and my printer hasn't worked in 3 months.)

So I'm back full circle and I don't think it is a perfectionist thing. I feel like Pygmalion--I've gotten a glimpse into another world, know what I can and cannot do. But go back and sell flowers?

So today I fight the next battle in my son's life and think about my next transformation. Maybe I'm unique, but I doubt it. Hope this story gives you a product idea.
