Another Reason to Buy Thesis Theme

Thesis WordPress Theme from DIYThemes has another compelling feature coming that I just love.

One of the key selling points of the theme is that it is so well built, and so flexible, that it’s the only theme you need.

How flexible? Did you know Copyblogger is now using Thesis? Can’t see the difference, but now Brian has all the advantages of Thesis architecture but the look and feel we know and love. Cool, eh? πŸ™‚

Confusingly though, as mentioned in my last thesis theme post, they were talking about releasing a “magazine style” theme called Cosmo. Well, confusion over, those features are being rolled into thesis – existing and future customers get magazine functionality for no extra cost!

The DIYThemes guys explain …

I know you’ve all been waiting patiently for Cosmo to be released, and on that note, you’ll be happy to know that the next major Thesis update is going to contain home page layout and display controls. Effectively, this is going to be the first release of Cosmo, but we’re not going to change Thesis’ name to reflect that fact.

All Thesis users are going to have access to this functionality at no additional cost, so if you were worried about having to pay more for “Cosmo,” worry no more.

If you were on the fence thinking do you need Thesis or a magazine style theme, now you know when you buy thesis theme you will get both! πŸ™‚

  1. I think that’s a very smart decision. I also think it’s kind of funny that a theme that received a bit of criticism for looking the same on every blog is quickly going to become the theme that nobody will recognize on any blog because it will have so many easy-to-use customization options that no two Thesis Theme blogs will look alike.

  3. Hey Chris, even I was amazed that the Copyblogger “look” was so easily ported to the Thesis framework. Instead of design and code being stuck together in an inflexible “theme” the design and code are now independent (which is the way it should be).

Pearson will tell you that Copyblogger is the most complicated design he’s done (I’m a pain, yes) but he was able to port over the design to Thesis on a Friday night with some cold beer.

I drank the beer, he did the work. πŸ™‚

  5. @Patrick – It really is a foundation for any blog now πŸ™‚

@Brian – I am tempted to port this blog, although I don’t have Chris’ mad design skills, beer or no beer πŸ™‚

I’m going to use Thesis on a new travel blog I am working on. Great news that they’re implementing ‘magazine’ functionality, that’s swung it for me.

  11. Chris –

Is there a way that the Thesis theme can be used with a private membership site or private blog?

  13. I know Thesis sounds great, I’m a programmer too and from that perspective it sounds like it’s really well built. Of course the design is beautiful too. When I first saw it I thought – I want that! I know everyone loves it and thinks it’s the best thing since sliced bread, but there’s one thing that bothers me and has kept me from seriously considering it… I have seen so many sites using what looks like the default design where the design is broken, the sidebar appears way down the bottom of the site. I’m not sure why, it’s not like that commonly happens with my OS and browser configuration and resolution. But it’s certainly the thing that has kept me from considering Thesis. Maybe I’ll have another look though…

  15. Hey,

Code looked great at first site! But it’s such a pain to code! Way to over complex, needs a lite version..

  17. @Terry – In so much as any WordPress install can work that way – you need a plugin or Amember

@Donna – Unfortunately the same goes for any theme, end-users might not install it correctly (you have to go into both option screens and hit save, and select a column layout, so not tricky) or might mess around with it πŸ™‚

@Lachy G – I disagree, especially the latest version with the “hooks” (1.3?), the code is really cool to work with. The only complaint I have is the custom.css and custom functions are not editable within WP, you have to use FTP/SSH/CPanel

  19. @Donna – The sidebars appearing at the bottom of the screen has happened to me on many themes I’ve tried, but never once using Thesis.

Some people have had trouble with this in Thesis using IE6 and IE7, but there are several solutions to be found in the forum, mostly having to do with removing elements that IE chokes on.

I’d suggest that you take a look at the forum to see 1) the IE solutions, and 2) the world-class support Thesis has.

  21. @Chris I figured people must have messed around with the settings, or tried to use an image or other element that’s too big. I guess it does happen with other themes, but maybe people don’t play with the options so much, since other themes usually don’t have options.

@Mike Thanks Mike, but I don’t use IE. I don’t use Thesis on any of my sites either, but I’ll keep the forum in mind if I do go ahead and buy Thesis.

  23. I’ve always been a fan of SEO friendly and crispy clean XHTML and CSS. And just by looking at Thesis, I feel as if it is the best theme ever.

What exactly is the Cosmo theme? I have never seen a preview of it before. Is it a part of Thesis? I don’t know since I haven’t bought Thesis yet.

  25. Smart move Chris, I’ve been meaning to change my theme too. This one gave me a headstart at brainstorming. Thanks!

  27. Hey Chris, am using Thesis for my new blog on my old site… no longer at b5’s thegoldenpenicl so am blogging at http://www.aboutfreelancewriting.com. I was doing well with it until the day before the announcement I screwed up everything and started over… everything worked like a charm and I’m no coder.

The forum has been great, the learning curve tolerable… suspect I’ll end up with a developer’s lic. as I convert the rest of my sites to blog form.

(and now I need to get a gravatar?!) πŸ™‚
